How To Convert Driver License For Foreigner Living In Vietnam? Long-term Work or Study?
Foreigners come to Vietnam to temporarily reside, work and study for more than 3 months or long-term. In case they already have an international driver’s license or a national driver’s license (issued in a foreign country where they reside) is still valid. If foreigners want to use it as a driver’s license to be allowed to drive in Vietnam, they must apply to convert to a corresponding driver’s license approved for use in Vietnam.
The procedure for converting the driver’s license in Vietnam includes
a) Driver license converting application (in the prescribed form), certified by the heads of foreign management agencies in Vietnam (by Embassy, Consulate, Representative offices of international organizations in Vietnam or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government Agencies, Investment & Planning Department, External Economic Department of Provinces and Cities, Foreign representative offices, General Director of the joint venture enterprises and enterprises with 100% foreign capital, heads of agencies where foreigners work or study).
b) A copy of abroad driver’s license.
c) Translate abroad driver’s license into Vietnamese which insured translation quality of the notary public of the State or Embassies, Consulates, Representative offices of international organizations in Vietnam that the translation works, and stamped with a photocopy of driver’s license.
d) A copy of passport (including passport number, name, and photo of the one who issued, the expiry date, and the entry visa into Vietnam page) or photocopy of identity card (diplomatic or public affairs) issued by the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign, Representative of international organizations enjoyed privileges and immunities which have referral letters in the form prescribed by the Protocol Department – Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
e) 03 color photos 3x4cm of ID size.
f) When filing procedure for converting the driver’s license, must present the abroad driver’s license and passport (or diplomatic or public affairs identity card provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam) for comparison with a profile.
The expiry date of the driver’s license in Vietnam has changed in accordance with the expiry date of the abroad driver’s license but not in excess of the limit prescribed for the Vietnam driver’s license
1. Do not accept applications for changing driver’s license expired, erased or torn off, no longer all the elements necessary to change driver’s license, or it has identified differences.
2. In case the international or national driver’s license for foreigners to drive many different vehicle classes are being exchanged for the correlative driver’s license of Vietnam.
3. Applications for changing the driver’s license of foreigners stored at the conversion driver license agency (Vietnam Transport Department) include material recorded at the points a, b, c, d, and e Sections above.
4. If changing driver’s license next time must have documentation as specified at the points a, d, e, g Section above.
5. If need to move driver’s license be granted to other local, management driver license agency makes moving form attached to driver’s profile transferring to management driver license agency to move to.
Conditions for changing international driving licenses for foreigners to Vietnam
According to current regulations, most foreigners from countries such as Korea, China, Taiwan, USA, France, UK, Japan, Canada, Australia, etc…are allowed to apply for a new driving license for Motorbike and Car in Vietnam.
To carry out the procedure to change the driver’s license for foreigners to Vietnam, the following valid papers are required
- Must have a valid driving license of a certain country (country).
- Have a clear identity document such as a passport (or labor contract in Vietnam).
- Have a visa or temporarily stay for 3 months or more or have a visa exemption.
Required documents
- Two-sided copy of foreign driver’s license.
- A photocopy of the information face on the passport.
- Photocopy of Visa or temporary stay for 3 months or more or with visa exemption.
Note: When coming to carry out the procedure for changing the driver’s license, the driver must take a photo directly at the driver’s license agency and must present the originals of the above documents (except for the originals sent) for comparison.
