Chilean Visa Types and Basic Requirements

There are many types of Chilean visas, suitable for different entry purposes, including:

Tourist Visa (Visa de Turismo): For those who are coming to Chile for a short-term visit or vacation. This type of visa is usually valid for a maximum of 90 days and can be extended.

Business Visa (Visa de Negocios): Issued to people who go to Chile to attend conferences, meet partners, or carry out short-term business activities that do not include permanent employment.

Family visit visa (Visa de Residencia Temporaria por Reunificación Familiar): Issued to people who want to travel to Chile to visit relatives, including parents, spouse, children or other family members legally residing in Chile.

Student Visa (Visa de Estudiante): Issued to students coming to Chile to study at schools, universities or other educational institutions, for a period corresponding to the study program.

Work Visa (Visa de Trabajo): For workers employed by a company in Chile or for workers working under a contract in Chile. This type of visa requires a labor contract from the Chilean employer.

Temporary Visa: Issued to people who plan to stay long-term for work, family, or other activities without the intention of settling permanently.

Permanent Residency Visa: For those who want to reside permanently or settle in Chile, usually after obtaining a temporary visa and meeting the required time and other conditions as prescribed.

Do Vietnamese people need a visa to Chile?

According to the Agreement between Vietnam and Chile effective from August 11, 2017, Vietnamese citizens holding ordinary passports valid for at least 6 months visa-free when entering Chile with travel purpose and maximum stay of 90 days.

However, for stays of more than 90 days or entry for for work, study, or income-generating activities, the applicant will must apply for appropriate visa before coming to Chile.

Members of consular agencies, diplomatic representatives, employees of international organizations and family members holding diplomatic or official passports are exempt from visas during their term of office.

Other Countries exempted from Chile visa 

According to information from the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizens of many countries are exempt from visa requirements when entering Chile for tourism purposes. The list of visa-exempt countries includes:

Europe: All European Union (EU) countries, Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom.

Americas: Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Asia: Brunei, Korea, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates.

Oceania: Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu.

Africa: South Africa.

Procedures for entering Chile with visa exemption:

Prepare documents:

  • Passport: Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
  • Round trip airfare: Confirmation of return or onward ticket to another country within the permitted period of stay.
  • Demonstrate financial: Proof of sufficient financial means to cover expenses during stay in Chile.
  • Confirmation of stay: Information about where to stay in Chile, such as hotel reservations or invitation letters from relatives/friends.
    When entering Chile:

Customs procedures: Declare the purpose of your trip and length of stay to customs officers.

Travel card: Obtain and keep the tourist card (Tarjeta de Turismo) issued at the border; this card must be presented when leaving Chile.
Note: The maximum stay is 90 days; if you wish to stay longer, you must apply for an extension at the Chilean immigration office before the period expires. Visa exemptions are only available for tourism purposes; if you plan to work, study or engage in other activities, you must apply for the appropriate visa before coming to Chile.

Can I extend my Chile tourist visa?

If you want to extend your stay in Chile for tourism purposes, you need to apply for a tourist visa extension before your stay ends (i.e. 90 days). To do this, you should contact the Chilean Immigration Department (Departamento de Extranjería y Migración) in Santiago, the headquarters of the Immigration Department is located at:
